2017 BP Hanukkah party_300pxDid you make the SJSP/Jewish Big Pals Hanukkah Party this year? It was great to see so many new and familiar faces for a fun afternoon of music, latkes, gifts, and goofy caricatures.Thank you to all who participated in this celebration. Whether you joined in our festivities or lit the candles at home, we hope you enjoyed a Hanukkah filled with light and laughter!

And we hope the joy continues into 2018! Don’t wait to celebrate our Jewish heritage and tradition until next Hanukkah. This New Year, consider making some resolutions around creating new Jewish traditions as a family. Whether it is a family goal to slow down once a week to eat Shabbat dinner together (even pizza counts), collecting your spare change and donating it to those in need (tzedakah), or volunteering together as a family (tikkun olam), there are many ways to do Jewish!

Martin Luther King, Jr.January offers all of us the chance to practice tikkun olam! Martin Luther King Jr. Day is January 15th. As a National Day of Service to commemorate Dr. King’s work, make it a day on, not a day off. Run a food drive in your neighborhood, assemble care packages for those in need, or color greeting cards to deliver to homebound older adults. And consider continuing this commitment to service all year. As Dr. King said, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” JFS has many volunteer opportunities year-round.

Tu B’Shevat, the Jewish Birthday of the Trees, caps off the month and provides another opportunity to do good by planting a tree to improve our world and our air for future generations. To learn more, read our Jewish Holiday Spotlight and our recommended cooking project.

Wishing you a meaningful and joyous New Year,

Jewish Value Spotlight: Tu B’Shevat – Evening of January 30th

tree_plantingTu B’Shevat – the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat - is a major holiday in Israel (correlating to January 30th on our calendar). Because of Israel’s climate, this is around the time in Israel when the sap starts to rise in the trees.

Celebrated as the “Birthday of the Trees,” Tu B’Shevat is the perfect opportunity to talk about recycling, preserving and sustaining nature. We live in a time of great ecological concern. Jewish tradition is filled with texts protecting and appreciating the bounty that we have on this Earth. This famous quote from the Bible illustrates how Judaism views the importance of trees:

When you war against a city . . . you must not destroy its trees . . . you may eat of them but you must not cut them down . . .
(Deuteronomy 20:19,20)

Here are some customs that you can follow to celebrate Tu B’Shevat in your home:

  • Eat the “7 Species” mentioned specifically in the Bible: figs, pomegranates, dates, wheat/barley, olives, grapes, and dates. All of these grew in Israel during Biblical times and are still grown in Israel today.

  • Make “Easy Bake Carob Crunch.” Carob is a relative of chocolate that grows in Israel, as well as other places in the world. The recipe can be found at the end of this email.

  • Plant a tree in your backyard and/or in Israel (through the Jewish National Fund http://www.jnf.org/jnf-tree-planting-center)
  • Create a Family “Tree.” Make a big picture of a tree on large construction paper. Place on the tree photos or drawn pictures of members of your family,
  • Plant parsley seeds. If you tend them well, your parsley will be ready in time for Passover.

Happy New Year

After you have slept in, what is there to do on Jan. 1st? If the weather is nice, how about a walk at the beach or a hike?  If it’s too cold (or more likely, too hot), stay in, play card games (Uno on the 1st day of the year sounds perfect!) or board games, or watch a good movie. Or for the very brave, get a thrill from the chill at Saska’s Polar Bear Plunge where individuals dive into the Pacific Ocean at 10:30am off Mission Boulevard. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2018!

Carob Crunch 1Easy Bake Carob Crunch

On Tu B’Shevat we taste many fruits that are grown in Israel—those with seeds and those that are seedless, those we eat completely and those we shell or peel. Here is a recipe using carob, a relative of chocolate, which grows in Israel and other places around the world.

Cooking equipment needed:

  • Saucepan
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Baking sheet

Ingredients

  • 3/4 Cup of honey
  • 1/2 Cup of carob powder
  • 1/2 Cup of milk (or non-dairy milk substitute)
  • 1 Teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1/2 Cup of margarine
  • 3 Cups of rolled oats

Directions:

In a saucepan, combine honey, carob, milk, vanilla and margarine.  Boil for 5 minutes stirring constantly.  Remove from heat.  Add oats and mix well.  Drop a teaspoon of the mixture at a time onto wax paper and let cool and enjoy!
