Preparing for the High Holy Days

FC-high-holy-daysDoes anyone else get excited for the High Holidays? For many kids (and adults) it can be challenging to sit in temple all day, but we encourage you to think of it as a time of reflection, both for you and your kids. Take this time to think about the past year, both the good and the bad. Make amends and encourage your children to do the same. Ask them what they would like to see happen in the New Year, and talk about how you can help transform their hopes into reality.

Another reason to love the holidays – tradition. These days, with so many other areas of our lives constantly changing, it can be comforting to know that some things remain the same year after year. The beauty of the High Holidays service is found in its consistency –  the same prayers, being with family and friends, and honoring our loved ones who have passed away.

This year, Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) begins at sunset on Oct. 2nd and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) begins at sunset on Oct. 11th. If you need help finding a High Holiday service to attend in San Diego, please contact Malissa at malissaw@jfssd.org. We can help you find options for members, non-members, as well as free community gatherings in San Diego for everyone who wants to participate.

In October, we hit the Jewish holiday jackpot! Did you know that we also get to celebrate Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah? For more information on those holidays, check out our “Jewish Holidays Spotlight.”

Have you joined the SJSP Facebook group yet? Our FB group offers a great way to connect and share with other Jewish single parents beyond our monthly groups or events. We’ll also be using it to poll your interest about future events. Email Malissa at malissaw@jfssd.org to join and connect with other single Jewish parents.

corner market volunteerHelp Out at the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry
The Hand Up Youth Food Pantry feeds hundreds of homeless and hungry individuals and families each month. You can help alleviate hunger by conducting a food drive in your school, business, group, or congregation! We’ll provide you with everything you need, including flyers and food bins.

Volunteers are also needed in the pantry to sort through donations, stock the shelves, and assemble food bags for distribution. Two Sundays a month, volunteers are invited to participate in our military food distributions. We have a wide variety of opportunities in the pantry and other areas for both individual and group volunteers.

Jewish Holiday Spotlight:
Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah

  • Sukkot means “booths” (the singular is sukkah). Sukkot commemorates the wanderings of the Israelites in the desert, with the booths or huts representing the temporary shelters that the Israelites lived in for 40 years. It is considered a mitzvah to eat, sleep and invite guests into your sukkah. For a fun art project, check out this edible sukkah project.

  • Much of the imagery of the holiday revolves around rejoicing and thanking God for the completed harvest. A ritual of Sukkot is the waving of the lulav,a woven bundle of the four species of plants mentioned in the Torah: lulav (palm frond), the hadass (myrtle), and the aravah (willow) with  an etrog (citron). While holding them together, we wave them in four directions as a symbol of G-d’s surrounding presence.

  • Shemini Atzeret means “the assembly of the eighth (day).” Accordingly, it is the final day of celebration of Sukkot.

  • Atzeret can also mean “to gather” or “to store up.” It is thought that we must store up the sentiments of gratitude and devotion acquired throughout the entire fall holiday season because it will be two months before we celebrate the next Jewish holiday, Hanukkah.

  • Simchat Torah means “rejoicing in the Torah.” This holiday marks the completion of the annual cycle of weekly Torah readings. We read the last Torah portion, then proceed immediately to the first chapter of Genesis, reminding us that the Torah is a circle, and never ends.

  • During this time of great celebration, there are processions around the synagogue carrying Torah scrolls and plenty of high-spirited singing and dancing in the synagogue with the Torahs. Children often follow the procession around the synagogue, sometimes carrying small toy Torahs.
